When is Your Tax Return Due?

At a glance: - The Tax Office is reminding taxpayers that the lodgment due date for some income tax returns for the 2008/09 tax year is October 31, 2009.
You should: - Be aware of the lodgment due date for your 2008/09 income tax return.
- Contact us if you require any clarification or advice.
1. Individual taxpayers are required to lodge their 2009 income tax returns by October 31, 2009 if:

- They do not lodge their tax returns through a registered tax agent; or

- They have not advised the Tax Office of their appointment of a registered tax agent by October 31, 2009.
 
2. Taxpayers who lodge their tax returns through tax agents may still have a due date of October 31 if:

- They had one or more prior year tax returns outstanding at June 30, 2009;

- They have been prosecuted for failure to lodge a tax return in the past; or

- Their tax agent has not lodged the authority to act on their behalf by October 31, 2009.
 
3. Superannuation funds must also lodge their income tax returns by October 31, 2009 if they had any prior year income tax returns outstanding at June 30, 2009.
 
4. As October 31, 2009 falls on a Saturday, the Tax Office has advised that lodgement and/or payment can be made on the next business day without incurring any penalties or general interest charges.
