| 1. |
On September 30, 2009 Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga were struck by a tsunami, while Sumatra was hit by an earthquake which caused significant damage.
|
| 2. |
A few days earlier, tropical storm "Ondoy" caused widespread damage to parts of the Philippines.
|
| 3. |
Various appeals have been launched to help victims of these disasters. In addition, some organisations have begun collecting cash donations on behalf of charitable organisations to support the relief operations in affected areas.
|
| 4. |
Employers may collect donations from their employees on behalf of a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) through a workplace giving program or salary sacrifice arrangement.
|
| 5. |
Organisations that collect donations on behalf of DGR's must ensure that they comply with their state and territory collections provisions.
|
| 6. |
The Tax Office has reminded the public that donations to an appeal are only tax deductible if the organisation operating the appeal is endorsed as a DGR and is an overseas aid fund.
