Overseas Forces Tax Offset
Overseas Forces Tax Offset

Are you? - An Australian Defence or a UN Armed Force member who has served overseas?
At a glance: - The Tax Office has released a guide providing locations for which the overseas forces tax offset can be claimed.
You should: - Be aware of the overseas forces tax offset.
- Contact us if you require any clarification or advice.
1. Taxpayers are eligible to claim an overseas forces tax offset if:

• They served in a specified overseas locality as a member of the Australian Defence Force or a United Nations Armed Force in the last financial year; and

• Income relating to that service was not specifically exempt from tax.

2. A Tax Office guide is available which outlines the specified localities for which the overseas forces tax offset can be claimed as well as the dates on which the localities became eligible.

3. Eligible taxpayers can claim the offset from the date the area became eligible.

4. The guide also highlights areas which were formerly specified localities for the purpose of the overseas forces tax offset and are now no longer eligible. Taxpayers may claim the offset up to the date the locality became ineligible.

5. For more information, click here, or visit the ATO website at http://www.ato.gov.au
