1. The Tax Office carries out various intense data matching programs to ensure taxpayers disclose correct tax information. Recent data matching activities have focused on motor vehicles, mining contractors and personal services entities.

2. The Tax Office will request and collect details of up to 2.5 million Australians who have purchased or acquired a motor vehicle costing $10,000 or more. This will be gathered from State road authorities and other Government sources.

3. The Tax Office also plans to request information on amounts paid by mining companies to contractors and sub-contractors. Records of more than 100,000 individuals or entities engaged in contract work have been sourced from the large mining companies.

4. The Tax Office will also match data from entities with personal services income that contract through labour hire firms. The aim is to identify income which may be caught by the personal services income rules.

5. Taxpayers found to have fraudulently attempted to evade their tax obligations face large penalties.
