| Fishing for international business in Tokyo |
The 2010 Kreston International Asia Pacific Regional conference was held in Tokyo, Japan on 8-11 July.
Jointly hosted by Kreston member firms Okomoto & Co and Hongo Tsuji Tax & Consulting, the conference was held at the impressive offices of Hongo Tsuji Tax & Consulting in the main Shinjyuku business area of the city.
The conference attracted 21 delegates from Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Australia.
The conference began with a visit to the offices of Okomoto & Co where managing partner Richard Okomoto outlined the firm's successful approach to supporting overseas companies setting up business in Japan.
Mr Yoshihiro Hongo, managing partner of Hongo Tsuji Tax & Consulting welcomed delegates to his office and introduced the varied business programme. Sue Almond and Jon Lisby provided an overview of the recent developments in Kreston International, including the development of multi-firm groups, the benefits that many members sought with the adoption of common branding, global independence policies and quality monitoring. Delegates learned about the Japanese tax system in a series of briefings from an external speaker and representatives from the two host firms.
Speakers from the Osaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry provided a fascinating overview to the advantages of doing business in the diverse Osaka region, with its focus on high-tech and electrical industries. Naomi Fink, Japan Strategist of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd., gave an economist's view on the Japanese economy and the prospects for a sustainable recovery.
After the formal business programme, delegates continued to network on a tour of Tokyo and were fortunate to visit the ancient temple at Asakusa on one of the main festival days in Japan. They also dined in a traditional Japanese restaurant where Tony Yuan of Chinese member firm Zhonghui displayed hidden talents catching four fish for the delegates' dinner.
The 2011 Asia Pacific Conference will be held in August in Jakarta, Indonesia.
