1. APRA has released its annual bulletin highlighting the performance and makeup of different superannuation fund types for the last financial year.

2. The bulletin highlights that the 2009 financial year was generally very tough for all super funds with total superannuation assets falling 5.8%. Small funds with fewer than 5 members were the only funds to experience a very small growth in superannuation assets of 0.5%.

3. The tough economic conditions in the financial year meant that many funds recorded large negative rates of return, with the ten year average rate of return dropping to 3.4% per annum.

4. It was noted that superannuation funds received a total of $112 billion in contributions during the 2009 financial year with $72 billion being employer contributions and member contributions of $40 billion.

5. For more information or for the detailed copy of the bulletin, visit the APRA website at www.apra.gov.au
