At a glance: - The Tax Office has recently released various fact sheets highlighting the issues that taxpayers must consider when preparing their 2009 income tax returns.

1. The following fact sheets relevant for the 2008/09 financial year have now been released by the Tax Office:

a. Individuals
- This fact sheet provides information about:
- The new education tax refund and HECS/HELP benefit that can be claimed in the 2009 income tax returns;
- The family tax benefit can no longer be claimed in your income tax return;
- Requirements for Government contributions to First home saver accounts
 
  b. Capital Gains Tax
- The Tax Office will be focusing on capital gains tax issues in the 2009 income tax returns. This fact sheet provides information about your tax obligations when you dispose of an asset.

c. Claiming deductions for rental property expenses
- This fact sheet provides taxpayers with information about rental property expenses that can be claimed versus those that cannot.

d. Claiming work related expenses
- The guide provides taxpayers with information about the types of expenses that can be claimed in relation to their employment.

e. Business - this fact sheet highlights the new issues for businesses including:
- The new small and general business tax break;
- 12 month interest free payment arrangements for tax debts and deferral of payments for business activity statement debts;

f. Tax help in difficult times
- This fact sheet provides information regarding the measures the Tax Office has in place to help taxpayers experiencing financial difficulties and those affected by natural disasters.
