1. The Government has issued a technical paper on the operation and taxation of the superannuation system in Australia.
 
2. The paper covers the 2009/10 financial year. Some of the highlights in the technical paper include:
 
 
a. The taxation of superannuation contributions and benefits;
b. The level of superannuation contributions that employers must make on behalf of their employees [Superannuation Guarantee];
c. The ability of superannuation fund members to choose the fund into which superannuation contributions are paid by their employer under the Superannuation Guarantee;
d. The Government co-contribution scheme;
e. Superannuation contributions splitting with a person's spouse;
f. Taxation of superannuation fund earnings;
g. Payment and taxation of superannuation benefits;
h. Preservation rules;
i. Death Benefits;
j. How Goods and Services Tax applies to superannuation funds; and
k. Self managed superannuation funds.
